Fontana, CA — Great weather, good friends and the howling of a bounty of vintage race cars from Indy roadsters to endurance racing icons to Tran-Am B-sedans last weekend made for a terrific meeting as the former HSR-West, now united in sanction as well as name with SVRA, made its annual trek to Auto Club Speedway here.
The combination road course and super speedway made for maximum speeds and a test of handling for the plethora of classes and sporty cars. For all classes the combo circuit was used, save the Indy and USAC cars which ran on the 2.5-mile banked oval.
The song of Doug Magnon’s 1966 All American Racers Eagle T2G echoing off the cavernous empty stands at the Southern California speedway, its four-cam Ford V8 turning at speed, reminded many of what drove their motorsport passion from the beginning. A host of roadsters and Indy Cars, with varied mechanical tones, some dating back to the 1920s, made for a colorful show as the different ages and speeds took the low, mid- and high lines around the banking.
Organizer Ed Swart was pleased with the weekend. While not a heavily attended spectator event, Saturday and Sunday brought out many curious onlookers who were able to mill about the garage areas and enjoy the many different flavors of high-speed historical artifacts, including a number of cars from the Tom Malloy collection such as a beautiful 1935 Miller Ford roadster and a Lola T70.
In the Two-Five Challenge for early 1970s Trans-Am B-Sedans, the track was heavily populated with the simple yet nimble Datsun 510s with a Datsun 710, some Alfa GTVs and BMW 2002s thrown in for some very close racing. The Historic NASCAR racers were right at home on the oval’s banking; however they were set up for the road circuit and barreled around the tight infield section before winding it up through the gears for two-thirds of a lap on the oval.
Essentially a club meet, The 12th Annual Southern California Historic Sportcar Festival was an opportunity to get up close to some great cars, enjoy unfettered access to viewing and soak up some authentic SoCal car culture and sunshine.
